Kwanzaa, a Swahili word for "first" begins on Dec. 26 and last through to January 1 and was created by Dr. Maulana Karenga in 1966 to counter racism experienced during the Civil Rights movement.

For seven days, those of African descent take part in celebratory traditions that honour Black families, communal histories, experiences and culture.
